ACT 1/68 (1), Chapter 1, Article2

AUDIT MANDATE

The President has the authority in consultation with the Cabinet, to establish, dissolve, define, and modify the functions, as and when deemed necessary of government ministries, department and agencies.

Under the Act, The President, from his Excellency's letter dated 1-D/7/93/110 (11 November 1993) has defined the functions of the audit Office as:

"To carry out all necessary functions to audit all accounts of the state " 

 

Excerpts from the Constitution 

 AUDITOR GENERAL

Auditor General

1) There shall be in the Maldives an Auditor General appointed by the President.

2) The Auditor General Shall have the qualifications required to be present in members of Citizens Majlis and shall be a person who in the opinion of the President is competent to perform the duties of the office of the Auditor General.

Entering upon office by the Auditor General

The Auditor General shall make before the President the oath set out in paragraph (k) of the schedule to this Constitution to enter upon his office.

Duties of the Auditor General

It shall be the duty of the Auditor General to audit the accounts of the State and to prepare reports in relation to the accounts of the State and to perform such other duties in respect thereof in accordance with law.

Maintenance of accounts of the State

The accounts of the State shall be maintained in accordance with the directions issued by the Auditor General on the advice of the President.

Resignation of the Auditor General

The Auditor General may resign from office by writing under his hand and addressed to the President provided however that the Auditor General shall continue to hold office until informed of the acceptance by the President of his resignation.

Removal of the Auditor General

The President may remove the Auditor General from his office, if in the opinion of the President the Auditor General has failed to perform satisfactorily the duties of his office.
